Highlights of the 2017 EDGE Summit
The EDGE Summit: Rehabilitation Issues in Communities of Color (Empowering Diverse Groups for Excellence) was held in May (May 4-5, 2017). The conference provided dynamic, interactive, and informative workshops delivering cutting-edge, research-based, information and practices to help counselors, therapists, social workers, and other helping professionals develop and further enhanced their skills in key areas. Overview information on the various sessions is presented below.
Rehabilitation in a Post Trump Era presented by Dr. LaVelle Hendrix provided insight and information on the impact of current political policy and the impact on the funding, support, and administration of rehabilitation counseling programs and agencies.
The Intersection of Trauma, Spirituality, and Ethics in Communities of Color presented by Dr. Nannette S. Funderburk examined the range and classifications of trauma. The workshop examined the role and impact of spirituality, religion, and social support in addressing trauma. This workshop also addressed counseling and therapeutic practices to address the combination of ethics, trauma, and spirituality.
Breaking Bread and Telling Lies: Office Politics and Workplace Bullying in Counseling Agencies presented by Dr. Tyra Whittaker presented vital information regarding the various forms of workplace bullying and the impact on organizations and clients. This workshop also presented data-informed best practices to address the environmental, personnel, and organizational impact of workplace bullying.
Counselor Heal Thyself: The Art of Practicing Wellness presented by Mrs. Gabrielle Bonner Smith, M.S., provided an opportunity for participants to experience fist-hand, the toll that helping others, without properly caring for yourself, can take. This session on counselor self-care and empowerment, provided rejuvenation that many counselors, therapists, and other helping professionals often take for granted.
